E. Texas women arrested for sparkler bombs

SAN AUGUSTINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - What may have been used only for a childish prank has gotten two Bronson women charged with felony crimes after deputies say they found sparkler bombs in their vehicle.

Candice Harris, 25, and Heather Horn, 29, are charged with prohibited weapon, a third-degree felony.

San Augustine County Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham said deputies responded to a call of a reckless vehicle complaint in the southeastern part of the county in the early morning hours on Tuesday. Cunningham said the driver of the vehicle evaded the deputies and they eventually abandoned the vehicle. Deputies caught up to the people in the vehicle and took them into custody.

Cunningham said when they searched the vehicle, they found sparkler bombs, which are made of sparklers bound together tightly with tape. When it is lit, it can blow up like a bomb.

Cunningham said the office called officers from the Barksdale Air Force Base and ATF agents to the scene, who defused the bombs and confiscated them.

The sheriff's office arrested Harris and Horn, and a juvenile. They also arrested Harris' brother, but later dropped the charge against him.

Cunningham said sparkler bombs can be deadly.

"In some circles it may be a childish prank, but it's a bomb," Cunningham said. "It can damage property and inflict serious bodily injury. The ATF takes it very seriously and so do we."
