Legendary coach visits Tyler

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -   At 81 years old, Bobby Bowden refuses to slow down.

"I'm speaking anywhere from 3 to 4 to 5 times a week all over the country," said Bowden.  "I've been out of the country. I've been to Israel, I've been to Iraq."

Tyler was his next stop speaking to the area high school seniors selected for the Northeast Texas FCA Heart of a Champion Bowl.

"Trying to get them to be role models," said Bowden.   "That's what our nation needs."

Bowden has won 377 games as a head coach, winning two national titles at Florida State.  He's no longer coaching the x's and o's but he wants to continue helping young people.

"I'm a firm believer in the FCA," said Bowden.  "Because in my last years of coaching I saw so much need these young men have, and the girls also, for a male figure in the home. Where's the male figures? So coaches have to fill that role. I used to tell my coaches at Florida State, you're going to have to be the daddy for these boys because a lot of them don't have one."

Coach loves to talk, but doesn't miss coaching.

"Don't miss it one bit," he said.  "I'm 81, if I was 50 I'd miss it.  I've retired from coaching, but I haven't retired from life."
