Lightning starts storage tank fire

LIBERTY CITY, TX (KLTV) - Authorities have confirmed that a fire that broke out during Monday morning's storms was caused by lightning.

The lightning hit some alt water disposal tanks on FM 2207, setting off an explosion.

Starla Parsons says the explosion was so powerful it shook her home.

"I came out and looked it looked like a funnel cloud like a tornado and then we got to watching it and realized it was  smoke real black heavy smoke," said Starla Parsons, felt explosion.

That's when Parsons took out her phone and began snapping pictures of the black smoke she says was about 600 yards from her door.

"My main worry was are we going to have to evacuate was there going to be more to it, it's a scary situation to think about ," said Parsons.

Instead of waiting, she and her husband decided to drive to the site to figure out what was happening.

Kilgore firefighters were called to the area around 9:30AM, and it took them and five other departments to get the fire under control.

"We're all trained to fight it but it won't do you any good until you can get foam on it we weren't making any headway until we got a foam truck from our department on the scene to put out the fire," said Russ Johnson, Kilgore Fire Chief.

While three people where on-site when the lightning struck the tanks, Kilgore investigators says no one was hurt.
