New Smith County Juvenile Attention Center Dedicated

For punishment, also for rehabilitation... a new juvenile attention center is dedicated in Smith County.

The new center on Morningside Drive is scheduled to open in October, but the ribbon cutting ceremony was Wednesday afternoon.

Juvenile inmates are currently housed in an old junior high school on Berta Street near Downtown, and the center has been there since 1981.

It's director says this new 68,000 square foot center will help the children become productive citizens.

Center Director Nelson Downing: "There is a price to pay, but what we try to do is take that circumstance that kid's in right then, with their peers, with law enforcement, and we try to help them through that and show them there's a better way to go."

Also, the county will get back more than $2 million from Denson Construction Company. That's how much the contractor came in under budget.
