9-year-old sends Austin a message about education

PITTSBURG, TX (KLTV) - We've heard from the state, teachers, and parents concerning the proposed state budget cuts that could drastically impact Texas schools.

But a little voice in Pittsburg, may be carrying the biggest message.

Meet the 9-year-old who has gained YouTube fame for her impassioned plea on behalf of education.

A YouTube video shows Pittsburg third grader Julianna Sewell making an energetic plea to the state, not to cut funding to education.

Pittsburg Elementary School Principal Stephanie McConnel calls Julianna, "An amazing student, motivated, just passionate about what she does and about the students in Texas."

Julianna wrote the speech herself, and genuinely understands the issue.

"School is not always about pencil, paperwork and tests, its about building relationships and feeling like family at school, and I would really hate to lose a good teacher to budget cuts," Julianna explained.

"I won't get my favorite job, but I won't get that job because someone will get that job over me because I didn't get the best education," she says.

She's making the urgent plea to Governor Perry, state senators, and the Texas legislature to save Texas schools. With the one voice that has not been heard---the children.

"My mom is a teacher and I thought this might help her out, she is a reading interventionist and some of them are getting cut," explained Julianna.

"She's just reaching out and she wants to be heard, she wants our Governor to listen and wants our representatives to hear what she has to say," says McConnell. "She's given the speech to her classmates and to the Pittsburg School Board."

In the mean time, she's a YouTube star, and she hopes someone in Austin is listening.

I hope some people listen to what teachers, what kids, what everybody's saying," Julianna remarked.

Julianna already has big plans for her own education. She says she plans to be a doctor.
