Teaching athlete

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -   Whitney Wyly is a student athlete.  You can also call her a teacher athlete.

"I love both the field and the classroom," said the UT Tyler senior.

Wyly is student teaching at Whitehouse High School. After spending nearly 9 hours at school each day, Wyly drops the books and picks up a bat.

"She has to be in Whitehouse all day long," said UT Tyler softball coach Mike Reed.  "Then come here for a 3 hour practice in the evening and then still have home work and lesson plans at night. She's putting in more days than most with full time jobs."

Luckily she has an understanding coach.

"Coach Reed has been great," said Wyly.  "He's always put our academics first. Me graduating on time is top priority for him. Getting here late, he'll start practices late for me, he'll stay late for me."

Class and practice everyday, plus a 40 game schedule.  She's also the only married player on the softball team.

"My husband is supporting me," Wyly said.  "Being able to adjust daily to the time schedule, he's great about that."

Wyly's full plate of work hasn't affected her work at home plate.  Wyly has played in all 25 games this season recording at least one hit in all but 4 games.

"Just knowing that when my teams in the playoffs, I did everything I could on the field," said Wyly.  "When I'm graduating in May, I know I did everything it took to do both."
