Bulls eye in Union Grove

UNION GROVE, TX (KLTV) -   Union Grove superintendent Brian Gray has struck a bullseye.

"I always wanted to start an archery program," said Gray. I'm an avid bow hunter. We started off 2 and half years ago with 30 kids."

That number has grown to 180.  Nearly one out of every 4 Union Grove ISD students is in the archery club.

From elementary to high school, it's ready, aim, fire!  The team has become so popular that Union Grove recently entered the state archery tournament with the most entries in Texas.

"I never thought it would get this large," said Gray.

"I just like shooting bows," said sixth grader Alec Mayhan.  Mayhan is one of five Union Grove students that's qualified for nationals next May in Kentucky.

"I got involved just because I'm an outdoor kind of kid," he said.

Joining Mayhan at nationals will be Noah Mayhan, Maddie Clowers, Maddie Newman and Rachel Gunter.  The archery team is on target to get bigger and even better.
