Whitehouse ISD bus involved in accident

WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) - A Whitehouse ISD bus reportedly ran off the side of County Road 1293 and into a ditch on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 4 pm near Paluxy Drive in Smith County.

According to DPS,  the bus driver was backing up when he went into the ditch, causing a rear tire to go off the road where it got stuck.

The 38 students on the bus used the emergency exit to get off the bus.

Whitehouse ISD notified parents, and asked that parents pick up their kids.

An investigation will be conducted by the school district to determine if proper procedure was followed following the accident. It was a parent, not the bus driver, who called officers to the scene.

Whitehouse ISD released the following statement:

On March 23, 2011, a bus operated by Whitehouse ISD was involved in a minor, single-vehicle incident on CR 1293 in Smith County. The bus was operating its ordinary after school route with 43 students on board. While executing a turn around, the right rear wheel of the bus went off the pavement and into a roadside culvert rendering the bus immobile. The incident resulted in no injuries, no damage to the bus, and no damage surrounding property. The driver evacuated the students in an orderly fashion, moved them a safe distance from the scene, and notified the school of the incident. The school district notified parents of the incident and immediately dispatched a relief bus to the scene. Some students also contacted their parents by cell phone and were picked up by their parents at the scene. The remaining students were delivered home by the relief bus. The Texas Department of Public Safety investigated in incident. No citation
was issued. Whitehouse ISD continues its investigation of the incident.
