Doing the Dirty Work

By Coleman Swierc

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Behind every dirty slide.

You will find KJ Fort.

"It is a big deal to me, just like these guys coming out here and getting a win, it is a big deal for me to pull their clothes out of a dryer and make sure they are clean."

He's been keeping things clean, since his day at Arp High School.

"From my freshman through senior year, I started managing everything, got to the point I did not leave the athletic department."

Years later, Not much has changed.

You will find K.J. with the TJC baseball team.

All the time.

"He is the only guy I know that likes coming out here early, staying late, washing clothes and putting it in our locker," said 1st baseman Ryan Payne, "We are greatfull he is here."

" I like to be behind the scenes of things, help it run smooth and help these coaches," said Fort.

In return, the coaches, and school made him an offer, he couldn't refuse.

In the only sport at TJC that does not offer scholarships to the players on the field, Fort has earned one, for his work, off of it.

"I am never going to play, but I am the one getting paid," said Fort, "I like taking pride in my work, and this area of work gives me that opportunity."

"He is looking to make a career and a future out of this," said TJC Head Coach Doug Wren, "So we are really excited to have a guy like that in our program."

Of course, the baseball manager, may need to know a thing or two, about the game

"I came out here and started throwing, and it was not something I was very good at."

"He thought he was a left hander," joked Payne, "He learned about a month ago that he was actually right-handed."

So his future wont lie on the diamond, at least not as a player.

KJ Fort, is just fine with that.

"It is easy for somebody to do anything in the world, but it takes someone who is right for the job to take pride and to do it right."

Moody Magic, a term coined by the Abilene Christian faithful to describe a supposed mystical aura around Moody Coliseum that gives the Wildcats a winning edge, is something the Stephen F. Austin men's basketball team fell victim to a season ago. Wednesday night, the 'Jacks cast a spell of their own - one of the defensive variety - to make sure their intrastate rivals wouldn't obtain a second-straight win in the series.
