Good Samaritan recovering from burns after fiery crash

TYLER, TX (KLTV)- A Good Samaritan, badly burned while trying to save someone's life, is now talking about her ordeal.

On March 9th, 22-year-old Brittany Kirkley was burned when she tried to pull a man out of a truck that crashed on University Boulevard in Tyler and caught fire. The driver of that car, 19-year old Randy De Shawn Smith of Groveton, died from his injuries.

Despite her injuries, Kirkley, says if she was placed in the same situation again, she would do exactly what she did.

Kirkley says she felt nothing but adrenaline when she reached into a fiery truck in hopes of saving a man's life.

"No, it didn't hurt," she said. "It set in a little bit after I walked away and I kind of sat there for a minute and yea, it just came all over face, my arms, but I'm thankful it's not that bad."

She spoke to KLTV by phone on her way to her first check up at a Dallas hospital.

"It's half and half. My right arm it's the bottom half that's burnt and my left arm it's the top half that's burnt and around my wrist are kind of tender still," said Kirkley.

Kirkley says she flashes back to the accident scene daily, where Smith died. Authorities say Smith tried to make an illegal U-turn, causing his truck to flip over and burst into flames. Kirkley says she sat numb in the ambulance, still not realizing the extent of her own injuries. Instead, she focused on Smith.

"I was mostly thinking about the boy and I was wanting to know like who he was. I don't know. I was just thinking about him."

Images of the scene, she says, will likely never go away. Kirkley says she would do the same thing she did for Smith for anyone.

"Treat others how you want to be treated especially in a time of need," said Kirkley. "He'll always be there. He's impacted my life and he'll always be in my heart and prayers."

A fund has been set-up to help Kirkley pay for her hospital bills. You can make a donation to Brittany Kirkley Tragedy Fund at any Southside Bank.
