Man convicted of having sex with a horse gets out of jail

LONGS, SC (WMBF) – A Longs man convicted of having sex with a horse more than once has been released from prison after serving 16 months, and must now undergo two years of probation.

According to the Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services, Rodell Vereen, 51, was released on March 1, thus beginning his two year probation sentence. Vereen must also register has a sex offender.

At the time of his arrest in July of 2009, Vereen was already on probation for a separate charge of buggery after Vereen was caught having sex with the same horse, Sugar.

According to Barbara Kenley, who owns the stable, she felt something was still continuing with her horses. She installed surveillance cameras in the barn, and upon reviewing those tapes, officers found Vereen having sex with Sugar for a second time.

He was then was arrested again on buggery charges.

In November, Vereen pled guilty to buggery and trespassing and was sentenced to five years in prison. A judge reduced that sentence to three years in prison and two years of probation.

In an interview with WMBF News while he was incarcerated, Vereen said he had been struggling with schizophrenia and hadn't been taking his medication.

According to the Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services, there are several factors that played into Vereen being released after 16 months.

Kenley told WMBF News she still has those surveillance cameras in the stables and she believes Vereen will be back.
