Tree Troops land in Tyler

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -  It took just about 300 volunteers--almost one, per tree--to help the city of Tyler plant 300 young trees throughout the city, Saturday morning.

It was Tree Tyler Day, an initiative headed up by Mayor Barbara Bass. The goal: plant 5,000 trees across the city within the next five years.

"This year, we've planted almost 1,000 trees and we want to keep that momentum going," said Bass.

"Many of our trees have been cleared out with our city's building progress, so we need to restore these trees to the environment to help keep the environment in balance," said Phyllis Carlyle, a volunteer with Keep Tyler Beautiful.

More than $12,000 was raised to provide trees for Saturday's city-wide planting party.  Bass said, so far, 1,000 trees have already been planted.
