The East Texas State Fair is just around the corner, but if you can't wait, we have something that just might hold you over. If you like funnel cakes, loosen your belt a notch. We've found the All-American Funnel Cake Kit. This week we put it to the "Does It Work?" test.
You've seen the box while cruising the discount store isles. The All-American Funnel Cake Kit makes it look easy-- mouthwatering funnel cakes, just like the ones at the county fair. The kit includes the funnel cake pouring pitcher, a powdered sugar shaker, a metal ring, 2 pounds of funnel cake mix, which makes up to 24 cakes and some cooking tongs. You also get a cookbook with recipes for all kinds of funnel cakes, but most importantly, a recipe for the same mix that comes supplied with the kit, so you can make more when that runs out.
First heat the oil to about 350 degrees. While that's happening, mix the batter. Just add one cup of cold water to every cup of powdered batter mix. Each cup of mix makes 3 or 4 funnel cakes, depending on how deep you make them.
Pour the mix in the special funnel shaped pitcher. Place the metal ring in the oil. The oil should come up about half-way inside the ring. Then pour the batter mix inside the ring's area. I started along the edges of the inside of the ring with a circular motion. Then I filled in the middle, using a zig-zag motion.
Browning the batter doesn't take long. Take the ring out of the pan as soon as it starts holding its shape. Be sure to use the tongs anytime you use the ring. Then grab the cake with the tongs and flip it over. It takes about 40 seconds on each side.
Pull the cake out of the oil and place it on a plate. You might want to use a paper towel to soak up some of the oil. It's also a good idea to shake some of the oil from the funnel cake while holding it over the pan.
We made 3 funnel cakes and they all came out perfectly. About the only glitch was the powdered sugar shaker. It became clogged.
The funnel cakes got great reviews from all who tried them.
We give the All-American Funnel Cake Kit a "yes".
