A family's fury: one grave, two bodies

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX (KLTV)-  An East Texas woman and her family make a disturbing discovery at the cemetery. A new grave, dug right on top of where one of their loved ones is already buried. Starr Cemetery is located on County Road 1215 in Van Zandt County.

Family members tell KLTV that whether this is a mistake or not, they want the man buried on this site moved somewhere else.

For Peggy Hale this cemetery was once a place to remember a loved one, taken too early in life.

During her and her family's last trip here they realized someone had been buried on top of their cousin by mistake.

"It's a really sick feeling to know that someone is laying on top of your cousin ," said Peggy Hale, cousin buried at cemetery.

Hale says last year the body was buried on top of her cousin Pauline Brown, who died more than 50 years ago.

Pauline's grave was never marked, but the family always knew her final resting place.

"During the years I was growing up there were rocks here marking their grave and I don't see the rocks now ," said Peggy.

But Peggy says she and her family didn't think markers were needed since just about everyone in their family rests in the same area.

Now Peggy is asking that this painful wrong be made right.

"I want him moved because our family is here and I don't feel like he should be on top of them like this," said Peggy.

Neither the funeral home nor the cemetery committee would comment on the matter.

Peggy says the funeral home will be writing a letter to the cemetery committee about the mix-up since they are the ones who marked the wrong spot for burial.

Both families and the cemetery committee will have to reach an agreement before the body can be moved.
