That a kid

By Ryan Peterson - bio | email

TATUM, TX (KLTV) -  His name is Javolick Garrett. His teammates call him 'kid.'

"He's the youngest of the guys that play," said Tatum senior Kendall Bell.  "That will be his name for the rest of his life now."

Garrett says he's okay with the name, for now.

"It bothered me at first when he told me on the bench, 'kid come here.'"  said Garrett.  "I was like 'kid?'"

Only a sophomore, Garrett was never considered a go to guy late in games.

"Every time I came in and out, my leg was shivering on the bench," said Garrett.

But after several Tatum seniors had fouled out in the regional final on Saturday and the Eagles trailing by three, the 'kid' grew up just in time.  Garrett hit a game tying three at the buzzer.

"When he threw it up, I just prayed it would go in," said Bell.

Tatum's prayers were answered.  An amazing buzzer beater propelled the Eagles to an overtime win.

"As soon as he shot it and made it, it was overtime and we celebrated," said Tatum senior Dylan Starling.  "We knew it was our game to win."

The unknown 'kid' on the bench has turned into a Tatum hero.

"He is a hero to me," said Starling.  "He has his own Facebook fanpage."

Garrett is soaking it in.

"At school people keep coming up to me saying 'hey hero.'" said Garrett.  "Signing shirts and basketballs, it's good."

"After making that shot," said Starling,  "Twenty years from now the whole town will know him as kid."

The 'kid' that sent Tatum to the state semifinals.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
