Meet the Rodenator

By Jamey Boyum - email

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - If you're a property owner, you've probably had to deal with those pesky burrowing critters. Any exterminator will tell you how hard they are to get rid of. So hard, in fact, some pest control services won't even do it.

Meet Brian Smith, he's got the right tool for the job. If it's small and makes tunnels, it doesn't like Brian. Not one bit. Most pest control services use traps or poison. He uses the Rodenator.

"Any concussion, explosion, will kill the animals," he said.

First he opens a tunnel, fills it with a propane oxygen mix, then a spark from the tip of the Rodenator ignites the gas.

The device was developed by Meyer Industries in Idaho and has been popping rodent holes since 2003.

Since October, Brian's been treating a soccer complex. The last thing a player wants is a broken ankle from a hole in the ground.

"So the top fields look pretty good. The bottom ones right now look pretty good so I'm kind of catching them in this area here. Instead of being hodge-podge through the fields you set up basically like grids," he said.

It doesn't always make a big bang, but when the tunnel is filled properly... they never see it coming.

Brian Smith has the only Rodenator in the area, that we could find, anyway. He says he won't use it in town.

Brian does notify authorities before he uses it. It can get pretty loud, which Brian believes can make the rodents relocate.
