Tyler Police investigating report of gun pulled on fifth grader

TYLER, TX (KLTV) – Police say a man pulled a gun on an East Texas fifth grader while the student was walking to school this morning.

Police say the gunman was in a van when he pointed the gun at the student on the 1900 block of Talley, in Tyler around 7:30 this morning.

Fortunately, the student ran, and the gunman never fired.

Tyler Police say the fifth grade student was just walking to class, like he does every day.

The student was walking along South Talley street on his way to Birdwell Elementary when a guy in a white van pulls up alongside him, points a gun at him. Police say the gunman didn't really have a chance to say anything, because the student immediately took off running toward the school.

Police say the student had TAKS testing Tuesday. Because of this, the student didn't have the opportunity to report the incident until Tuesday afternoon.

After interviewing the student, investigators say they have no reason to believe that this did not happen. In fact, the Principal knows the student personally.

The case is still under investigation, and no suspects are in custody at this time.

Authorities say the gunman was driving an older model white van with windows down the length of the vehicle, and there is a scratch on the driver's door.

The driver is described as a Hispanic male with a black mustache, wearing a black t-shirt.
