Chicken farmer devastated after finding 20,000 dead chickens

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – After finding more than 20,000 of his chickens dead, a Florence County chicken farmer is left wondering what happened and who could have been responsible.

The farmer, Gerald Coward, found the perished chickens Sunday at his farm along Bluefield Road, just outside of Scranton, and believes someone intentionally turned the fans off in the building the chickens lived in.

While he was able to save around 1500 chickens, it was too late for the other 20,000.

Capt. Mike Nunn, spokesman for the Florence County Sheriff's Office, said deputies are currently investigating the incident, but have very few clues at this point.

Coward said he estimates around $30,000 in damages.
