A Woman In Smith County May Have The West Nile Virus

Smith County doctors may know by the end of the week if they have the county's first human case of the West Nile Virus. A woman from northern Smith County is improving from symptoms similar to those caused by West Nile. But even if tests confirm the virus, Channel 7 Med Team Doctor Ed Dominguez says there is no reason to panic.  He says, "For one reason, the vast majority of people who are going to get mosquito bites are probably not going to get West Nile. In fact, they are not going to get west nile, statistically we know that. Secondly, we know that the people who are at highest risk for getting sick and being hospitalized are generally going to be the older patients and those with underlying illnesses."  The first person diagnosed with West Nile in East Texas, a woman we told you about last week in Gregg County, is in fair condition.
