TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The Tyler teenager accused of bringing a gun to school was in court on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say the teenager had a gun his backpack at Robert E. Lee High School on February 8. When approached by campus officers, the 15-year-old took off, dropping the bag, with the weapon still inside.

Friends and family gathered at the juvenile attention center for the 15-year-old's hearing.   During the hearing, a doctor testified that teen is not a threat to others or himself.

The boy's pastor, John Runnels, was there for the detention hearing and says there's a much larger issue people need to consider, "Its not that he's a young black kid, he's a young kid, you know, whether black or white, he's a young kid, and to see his life destroyed behind a simple mistake, it should be a concern of all adults."

The Judge ruled that the teen will stay in the attention center. His next hearing will be in two weeks.
