HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - A 58-year-old man faces child abandonment charges after he allegedly left three young kids in a fast food restaurant and went home to drink Thursday.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, Curtis Woods of Hammond is accused of leaving the 4, 5 and 6-year-old at a Burger King. Officials did not say how he is related to the children.

Deputies reported someone saw the youngsters walking in the road and picked them up. The person also contacted the sheriff's office. Authorities said they learned the children had been at the restaurant, so the responding deputy took them back there.

The kids reportedly told the deputy they went to the restroom, but when they walked out Woods was gone and they decided to walk home. Officials said they contacted the children's mother, who was worried about them, and she met them at the Burger King. Investigators said Woods also met them there.

According to sheriff's deputies, Woods started causing a disturbance and they could smell alcohol on him. They reported he was advised of his rights and started to tell his side of the story. He allegedly admitted to taking the kids to the restaurant and leaving them in the car while he went inside. He said he returned five minutes later and they were gone.

Reports indicated Woods allegedly said he figured someone picked up the children, so he went home and started drinking. He was apparently specific to investigators because in a news release officials said he consumed wine.

Woods was charged with three counts of cruelty to a juvenile, three counts of criminal abandonment and disturbing the peace.
