CANTON, TX (KLTV) - There are new developments in the car crash that left one Quitman ISD student dead, and three more in the hospital.

In their preliminary accident report, DPS Troopers note that neither Skylar Carpenter or Erica Blalock were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Authorities also say both 15-year-olds were sitting in the third row of their teacher's 2007 Suburban. They were on their way to San Antonio with their FFA group.

Troopers say the driver was going the speed limit when she left the roadway, over-corrected and rolled several times. The SUV landed upside down on the side of the road.

"When you got kids involved, it's a horrible deal," said Trooper Ben Rolison.

Witnesses actually called 9-1-1 while trying to stop traffic on the highway.

One of the first people on scene to help was a man who lives nearby. He described hearing a loud explosion-type sound. He rushed to the scene and helped Blalock who was lying outside of the car. Another witnesse helped the other kids get out of the SUV.

Erica Blalock was transported by helicopter to Trinity Mother Frances in Tyler. Upon her arrival, her condition was critical. She was upgraded to fair condition. Troopers say she suffered severe head injuries.

The other passengers transported to the hospital have all been released.

Funeral services for Carpenter have been announced, you can find them here.
