White Oak woman busted for faking burglary

WHITE OAK, TX (KLTV) - She told police she was burglarized; now an East Texas woman is in jail.

Angela Baldridge of White Oak is now facing fraud charges for allegedly staging an elaborate burglary hoax.

Authorities say the hoax may have been started because of Baldridge's separation from her husband.

White Oak Police say the alleged hoax started in October, when officers were called to the Baldridge home.

"From the photo's that were taken that night, yes, it did look like a burglary," says White Oak Assistant Police Chief Terry Roach, "They went inside and noticed that the house was ransacked and burglarized, at the time, they called police and reported a burglary."

Angela Baldridge, 36, was separated from her husband and did not live at the home.

Authorities say they quickly noticed things were not adding up, "She said several times, ‘it's a good thing I'm with my husband, or you might think I did it.'"

"They did file an insurance claim for the property… We have listed as just under $18,000 worth of property," said Roach.

Then came a phone call to police in November.

"Farmers Insurance Agent investigating the claim saying he had located some of the property in local pawn shops," Roach explained.

Police say Baldridge made the transactions, not knowing they went to a police database. But, investigators say they found Baldridge had made numerous trips to pawn shops well before she had faked the burglary, and it was those transactions that gave her away.

Jordan Osborne of Solid Pawn in Longview says "There's a 3-part ticket involved, one copy goes to the customer, the other copy we keep on permanent record, the other copy goes to the local police department."

When pressed, police say Baldridge cracked, "She confessed to taking the property, pawning some items… Her husband didn't have anything to do with it."

The reason police say Baldridge gave, she wanted money for her and her daughter.

Angela Baldridge is being held in the Gregg County Jail, her bond set at $4000.
