Couple left homeless on anniversary

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) – After spending some months without a place to call their own, an East Texas family finally found a home. But, a fire has now claimed that home.

The fire started around 10 on Monday morning, on CR 316 in Smith County, just north of Tyler.

Brad Smith says the hardest part was breaking the news about where they would go, "We told them we had to go back to a motel, and they were heartbroken, saying ‘not again.'"

After spending months without a home, Brad and Jennifer Smith thought they had finally gotten things together when they were able to get their first home for their four kids.

"When we moved in here, we started off with nothing… we bought and accumulated what we got, and we're—we're just going to have to start all over again," Brad explained.

Investigators say the fire started outside of the trailer, near the front door under the porch, with the high wind, the fire quickly spread under the home.

"My wife called me [saying] that I needed to come home, she was screaming and crying that the house was on fire," says Brad.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire, but were not able to salvage their home.

"I mean, we thought things were going so good, and this happened," explains Brad.

But, that's not the worst part for Brad and Jennifer, "It was our anniversary," said Brad.

While they're anniversary plans may have been put on hold this year, Brad's biggest concern is finding another home for his family.

Investigators were not able to determine the cause of the fire.

A fund has been set up for the Smith family at the Regions Bank on the east side of Loop 323 and Fifth Street.
