Marriage success story: The Days

By Jamey Boyum - email

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Valentine's Day is all about couples. Relationships, old or new, are hard work. Both of you have to want to stay in for the long haul. At Atria Copeland, an assisted living community in Tyler, has nine married couples who have been together for a combined total of over 500 years.

Betty and Bob Day talk about the day they met.

"I hired her to take my place," Said Bob Day.

"In a bar," Added his wife, Bettie.

"I worked a full-time job as an aircraft engine mechanic, and back in the fifties they didn't pay very much, so I had a part time job working as a bartender. I did that for about nine months and I finally got tired. So I told the owner I wanted out and she answered the ad and we hired her and I left the bar, "Bob added.

"I was working two jobs too. So, every time someone asks us how we met we have to say in a bar. But, it's not the usual bar pickup." Betty pointed out, "I remember you were so broke you got into your piggy bank, and we went to a dance at..."

"Magnolia Park. It was on the San Jacinto River. It was a kind of venue for up and coming country western singers," Bob stated.

"Including Elvis. I forgot to tell you if you ask Bob what time it is, he'll tell you how to build a watch. You have to realize that there not always going to be exactly what you want them to be. But, neither are you to them, so its just something you have to learn. I think our personalities seem to fit and we don't really have that much problem," said Bettie.

She adds, "We're still here. We made it another year."

"Yeah. We made it another year." Bob concluded.

Bettie and Bob Day have been married 52 years, and spent most of their lives in Texas.
