Teen in custody after man fatally shot, hacked with axe

CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A 36-year-old man was shot with two guns and his body was then mutilated in a brutal killing early Monday morning, authorities in Catawba County said.

A 19-year-old man was in custody in connection with the incident after calling 911 at 4:30 am to report the incident.

The gruesome killing happened at a house just south of Hickory in the 5200 block of Ruth Drive in the Mountain View community, WBTV's Steve Ohnsesorge reported.

After the victim was fatally shot – with both a handgun and shotgun – his body was hacked up with an axe, Catawba County deputies said.

"Investigators said it was one of the most bloody crime scenes they've ever scene," Ohnesorge said.

According to investigators, the victim also had words carved into his body – and had words written on his body with an ink pen. Investigators would not say what those words were.

The teen who is in custody is the roommate of the victim and has not been charged with the killing, but investigators say that he is the prime suspect.

Investigators are also trying to determine the relationship between the man and the teen -- beyond the fact that the two are roommates.
