Airman greets his kids with an emotional surprise

By Morgan Chesky - bio | email

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) – Winter weather tried to keep an East Texas family apart, but Mother Nature doesn't quite understand a Father's love.

Sub-freezing temperatures didn't stand a chance against a daughter's wish for her Father's safe return home from Iraq.

That wish came true on Friday in a surprise reunion.

A packed house set the stage for the surprise not soon forgotten.

On one side of Hudson Pep Elementary, Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Darren Thomas got ready to make a big wish come true.

On the other, son Stephen and daughter Morgan listened as their wish was read.

Morgan wished that the weather didn't keep her father away, and that he was released and able to come home.

Despite a winter blast crippling many parts of the country, nothing could keep this Father from home.

"My wife decided it might be fun instead of them coming to the airport for me to surprise them here," said Thompson.

And a surprise it was. No one wanted to let go—of the wish that came true.

"It was pretty surprising! I didn't know he was going to come home," expressed Morgan.

Thomas will soon celebrate 25 years of military service, but today, the celebration was for a son he held, and a growing daughter.

But, this dad and husband isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

This was Lieutenant Colonel Thomas's third 6-month deployment, and he says there are no immediate plans sending him away from home anytime soon.

Welcome home Lieutenant Colonel Thomas!

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>

The last time we talked about the Kilgore Bulldogs, quarterback Buddy Jackson and wide receiver Jonathan Shepherd were apart of the 800-meter relay team that won gold at the 2017 state track meet. But today they are back in the pads, and looking to turn their speed into touchdowns.  Competing in District 9-4A, Kilgore has always had a strong run game that helped them become the 2016 District Champs.
