AUSTIN, TX (KLTV) - A proposal by an Austin Democrat would make sexting a Class C misdemeanor and give judges the authority to sentence parents of offending teenagers.
The legislation was introduced by State Sen. Kirk Watson, Monday, in the Texas Legislature, and is supported by Attorney General Greg Abbott.
If adopted, SB 407 would also require teenage violators under the age of 18 to appear in court and permit judges to order his or her parents to an education program on the dangers of sexting.
Various studies show as many as 20% of teenagers have received or sent a nude or semi-nude photo. The proposal aims to put a stop to sexting by cracking down on parents as well as teenagers engaged in texting or e-mailing explicit photos.
