TYLER, TX (KLTV) – A former First Lady takes her place in the hot seat, giving Texas kids a firsthand account of life in the White House.

Among the thousands watching, only 21 were given a chance to talk with Barbara Bush. One of those students was right here in East Texas.

Jamia Whitaker of Jones MST Academy had an opportunity most will never have: Talking one on one with a former First Lady.

"She immediately wanted to make sure she knew what was going to be said. So, I made sure she was prepared," said Teacher Michelle Culpepper.

Jamia, along with 50 of her classmates anxiously waited for their turn to speak.

"What is the most important thing you learned in the White House?" one student asked.

"What inspired you to start the Barbara Bush Foundation for family literacy?" asked another student.

Others inquired about her duties at the White House.

Finally, after twenty students asked their questions, with thousands watching, it was Jamia's turn.

"What do you feel is your accomplishment being the First Lady?"

The long wait was over.

"That's a very good question…" replied First Lady Bush before diving into her answer.

"It felt like I was in the real White House, in a room, and we were talking personally together," says Jamia.

"I'm very proud of her," Culpepper said as she hugged her excited student.

The video conference was provided by the Education Department of The George Bush Presidential Library, across the state of Texas.
