TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Having a photo ID can give someone several rights, like traveling, or driving. But now having an ID will give you a right that some democrats believe should be automatic.

Texas Republican leaders passed a bill in a senate session that requires most residents to have an ID in order to cast in a vote. People that are 70 and older, or certain disabled people are exempt to the bill.

Some Smith County Democrats speak out about the concern they have about the voter ID bill passing in the senate.

David Henderson, Chairman of Smith County Democratic Party, says "Republicans have circulated internal documents, saying this will peel off 3 to 5 percent of the Democratic base, so that's really what is at stake here."

Republican State Representative for District 6, Leo Berman, disagrees. Berman made it clear by saying, " We're looking for clean elections in Texas, with no vote of fraud, we don't want to stop Democrats from voting."

Berman reports that there is a voter ID fraud issue in the state of Texas, and hopes this bill will stop future fraud from happening.

The voter ID bill will now move to the State House, where the passage is considered likely.
