UPDATE: Suspect in deputy shooting identified

Harrison County Deputy Sheriff, Sgt. Duana (D.J.) Couch was shot while investigating a civil process situation at approximately 3:45 PM, January 26, 2011.

The Deputy had walked onto the property on 5095 F.M. 9, south of Waskom, Texas and was conducting an investigation regarding a seizure order for an RV. The sole occupant of a mobile home on the property began firing on the Deputy with a 22 caliber pistol. The Deputy was able to return fire and sought cover. As the shots were fired from the mobile home, the Deputy was shot in the left side of her head. Deputy Couch was able to use her cell phone to call for assistance as she sought protective cover. Harrison County Sheriff Office Dispatchers put out a call for all agencies assistance to the location where the Deputy was located.

The suspect was the sole occupant of the trailer and retreated into the mobile home. He surrendered upon commands from the officers at the scene.

Deputy Couch was transported to Good Shepherd Hospital in Marshall for treatment of the gunshot wound to the head. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Harrison County Jail and booked in to jail. He is identified as Merrill H Wickware, W/M 1-18-1931.

Charges have been filed with the Harrison County District Attorney for Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer and Wickware is being held with no bond .
