LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- Answering false fire alarms has cost one East Texas city a pretty penny.

Over the past 6 years, Longview firefighters have responded to around 4300 false fire alarms, costing city taxpayers around $1.07 million. The city fire marshal estimates it costs about $250 for the typical response including manpower and equipment.

The fire marshal is proposing amending the city's code of ordinances to add fines to property owners whose fire alarm systems sound off false alarms.
