Hundreds of thousands of dollars are missing and presumed stolen from the city of Tyler. The city says they don't have an exact total yet, but they allege a Tyler Municipal Court employee was pocketing the money from fines, and covering their tracks by crediting the amount paid to jail time served.
The city has hired a professional fraud investigator, and will be reconstructing the events of the last few months to determine what happened.
"The first thing I did," explains Tyler Mayor Joey Seeber, "I asked the city manager not only to investigate this instance, but also investigate all of the cash handling procedures in the city and make sure they are bring followed, and that they are adequate to prevent something like this from happening in the future."
Seeber says the city plans to file charges, although the exact nature of those charges won't be known until the full amount of the crime is determined.
