RIDGELAND, S.C. (WTOC) - Fifth grader, Tyrek Simmons, is happy to be back home after being in a hospital hours earlier gasping for air.

"I couldn't hardly breath, and I was itching, and my throat was hurting," said Tyrek.

Friday night, about 250 people attending the Ridgeland versus Allendale-Fairfax basketball game were locked down after a few people came down with some sort of illness.

"We were playing in the first quarter and one of our players broke out in hives and then all over his face he got bumped up. They called EMS and he left, but then another girl caught it," said 9th grade Ridgeland basketball player Tyrae Simmons.

The players and fans were moved from the gym to another part of the school and small groups were taken through a decontamination process.

Although Tyrek appears to be better now, relatives are still searching for answers.

"They need to let us know something because we have younger kids at home and that could have contaminated us or them," said Tyrek's older cousin, Crystal Simmons.

At this time no one knows exactly what caused almost a dozen people at the basketball game to get sick. An environmental air quality company has been called in to investigate. Until then Ridgeland School will remain closed.
