Authorities not ruling out more arrests in inmate death

GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) – Authorities are not ruling out more arrests in the death of an East Texas inmate.

Amy Cowling was pronounced dead last Wednesday after she was found unresponsive at the Gregg County Jail.

Jailer Tomeka Cross was arrested New Year's Eve in connection to Cowling's death. She is charged with tampering with a government document.

Then, a second jailer, Brain West, was booked in on similar charges. But, authorities tell us his arrest stems from another issue.

"…but also during the investigation, we determined other information related to an incident that occurred at a different time," said Sheriff Maxey Cerliano.

When asked if the other information was about Cowling, the Sheriff said no.

Sheriff Cerliano says at this point, he can't be certain how many doctored jail logs are out there.

He went on to say, "It's our responsibility to determine whether or not these are isolated incidents, or whether it's a widespread problem."

Investigators are still working through pages of documents and electronic recordings.

"I'm extremely frustrated. These people were trained," Cerliano said of the jailers.

He says the investigation into Cowling's death also uncovered, not just several jail policy violations, but their violators, too.

A night supervisor and two other jailers have since been fired, another resigned once the investigation began.
