Smith Co. inmates transferred on account of non-compliance

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) – Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano says when the department learned about falsified jail observation logs, it immediately contacted the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

As of December 30, the Gregg County Jail was not in compliance, and was forced to transfer all 25 contracted Smith County inmates to Upshur County.

"Our relationship with Gregg County has been outstanding. They give us a good price, they help us with the transfers, they take a lot of pressure off of us. So, yes, we'll continue to do business with Gregg County as soon as they're back online," says Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith.

Smith says he received a call from the Gregg County Sheriff's office as soon as the non-compliance report came back.

He also noted that inmate transfer did not come at any expense to Smith County.
