9:34 PM UPDATE - Jarom Tefteller, the attorney representing Amy Cowling's family told KLTV on Monday night, "This supports what Amy's family has been telling us all along. People are quick to judge and accept what officials say as the truth. We now know that the victim was telling the truth. It's just sad."
GREGG COUNTY (KLTV) - The Gregg County Sheriff's Office says a former jail employee has been arrested in connection with the death of Amy Lynn Cowling.
Cowling, a 33 year-old Gilmer resident, died last Wednesday while she was being held at the jail.
A sheriff's office spokesman says 34 year-old Tomeka Cross was arrested and charged with tampering with a government document. Captain Mike Claxton reports that an investigation determined Cross had falsified a jail observation log. Cross had worked at the jail since August.
In addition to Cross's firing, Captain Claxton says these jail employees were also fired: Corporal Kashena Davis, jailer Jacqueline Smiddy, jailer Gary Lewis, and jailer Brian West. During the investigation jailer Darrell McClenton resigned.
Sheriff Maxey Cerliano stated that if anyone has done anything improper regarding the incarceration of Cowling or has failed to follow medical standards established to safeguard the health of all inmates, that employee will be dealt with quickly and severely.
Amy Cowling's family has said they told jail workers Amy needed her medications but they refused to give them to her.
The Gregg County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers, and Gregg County District Attorney's Office are all investigating.
