2 sisters share freedom, and a kidney

MISSISSIPPI (KLTV) – Two sisters who have spent sixteen years in prison for an eleven dollar robbery conviction will soon share freedom, and a kidney.

The life sentences of Gladys and Jamie Scott have been suspended by Mississippi's governor. The only condition: Gladys must donate a kidney to her sister.

The Scott sisters have received support from advocacy groups, including the NAACP, which called for their release.

The sisters called this a very good day as they thanked Governor Barbour.

Governor Barbour also cited the substantial cost of dialysis treatment for the sister in need of a kidney.

The state was paying between $90-100 thousand a year for treatment.

It could take anywhere from seven to forty-five days for the sisters to be released.
