TYLER, TX (KLTV)- Nicolas Avila says he promised his wife and kids a special Christmas this year filled with good food, family and lots of presents. However, come Christmas eve morning everything quickly changed.

"I feel terrible, we had everything for Christmas.... but everything we had burned down," said Nicolas Avila, homeowner.

"I was doing the last minute grocery shopping and I just came up here and I saw these ambulances and trucks and I thought the worst," said Maria Avila, homeowner.

Instead of being greeted by family and friends the Avilas were greeted by firemen, working fast to put out the flames that were destroying their home.

The fire started in the chimney due to some faulty bricks at the top, some flames caught the attic on fire and it quickly worked its way down. Yet despite the firemen's speedy work it wasn't enough to salvage the Avila's Christmas.

"I'm sad, all of my toys got burned," said Nicolas Avila Jr., nine-year- old son.

The Avila family were Salvation Army Angel Tree recipients and all of the donations are now burned up.

"I'm just really sad, I'm really upset," said Maria.

Yet despite this unfortunate event Maria says it's still Christmas and she still has a lot to be thankful for.

"We lost everything but at least I have my family," said Maria
