Murder indictment handed down in fatal police chase wreck

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A Longview man involved in the police chase that killed an innocent driver was indicted on murder charges by a Harrison County grand jury, Tuesday.

On November 10, 37-year-old, Charles Ray Owens was trying to evade DPS troopers when he hit a Honda Accord at the intersection of Paige Road and Loop 281, killing 62-year-old Robert E. Smith, also of Longview.

The murder charge carries a punishment range of five to 99 years in prison, along with a possible fine of up to $10,000.

At the time of his arrest, Owens was wanted on an outstanding burglary warrant from Michigan.
