800 Angels need your help

By Samantha Jordan - email

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Some East Texas families will get their Christmas gifts thanks to the Salvation Army Angel Tree. That is if they are one of the lucky ones.

This year, there are about 800 angels still needing a gift. The deadline to help these families ended Monday, December 13th.

According to the volunteers at the Salvation Army, this Christmas is a little different because this is the most angels leftover only days before distribution.

"We have about the average amount of families when you look back over 15 years, we've had many more families other years, but this is the most angels we've had left at three days before distribution," said Larry King, Salvation Army Volunteer.

This year there were 3800 angels on the tree. The good news is 3000 were picked and will get some help, but others were not as fortunate.

"Well, we had about 800  that weren't selected this year, either they weren't selected or their gifts weren't returned and we're having to fill the voids," said Vicki Hastings, Salvation Army Community and Corporate Relations Coordinator.

According to Hastings this year they had more families on the tree.

"We've seen a big increase in need and more and more people are having difficulty making these extra purchases like Christmas gifts," said Hastings.

Despite their short comings their goal remains the same, for every angel to have a gift come Christmas morning.

"It'll be a lot of work here the next two days...it'll get done it always has in the past and the good Lord looks after us and we'll get them filled," said King.

These families really need your help.

The Salvation Army will be accepting monetary donations this week to help offset the cost of gifts. If you would like to make a donation to help the angels in need you can stop by the Salvation Army, which will be open 24 hours a day.
