Trooper not charged in crash that led to deadly chain reaction

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A DPS Trooper will not be charged after a crash that led to a deadly chain reaction.

On November 2, trooper David Rice lost control of his vehicle, sliding off the road near Estes Pkwy in Longview.

32-year-old Trent Hepler was trying to get across to help the trooper, when a crane truck began to slide, hitting and killing him.

Investigators say Rice's vehicle had worn tires. That and his speed are believed to have led to the first wreck.

The driver of the truck that killed Trent Hepler was ticketed for failing to control speed.
