Elderly woman beaten to death with bat, son in custody

Elizabeth Wilson Elizabeth Wilson

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - Sumter County deputies are investigating the beating death of a elderly woman in the town of Mayesville.  The woman's son is in custody as a person of interest.

Deputies responded to 17 Congress Street around 8:45pm Monday, and found 85-year-old Elizabeth Wilson beaten with a baseball bat.

According to neighbor Sarah Wheeler, one of Wilson's sons ran to her house for help.

"I know something had happened. He said his brother had gone crazy and hurt momma and I called," Wheeler said. "Before I could get out the door, he said my momma dead. But I never went further than the front yard. I didn't want to see her."

Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock said Wilson died from injuries sustained after being beaten with a baseball bat.

Deputies have not charged Wilson's 55-year-old son with a crime.  They also say the son lived at the home with his mother, and has a history of mental illness.
