Bullard residents sending care packages to the troops

BULLARD, TX (KLTV) - For one East Texas community, before the Turkey was even in the oven this week, thoughts were turning to a different holiday.

Bullard residents are sponsoring two military units this year by sending dozens of care packages to the men and women who can't come home for Christmas.

They probably aren't the same kind of presents that filled your shopping carts Friday morning, and they won't be going under any tree.

These packages are going to a very remote river valley in the mountains along the Pakistan border. The mail there usually takes about a month, and has to be flown by helicopter.

That is why these care packages have to go out now. All of this was put together by Bullard residents and students from Hubbard Middle School in Tyler, and the goodies come with special messages too. Some with poems, others with thank you notes to the soldiers.

For some of the gift-givers, it is a family thing. For others, it is just a way to reach out to the folks who, otherwise, may not hear from home.

Altogether, there will be three hundred boxes sent from this group in Bullard to the soldiers in Afghanistan.
