Chase claims Longview man's life

By Bob Hallmark - bio | email LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- A brief but deadly high speed chase in Gregg county cost an innocent man his life today. The chase started around 8 this morning on Smelley road, near Longview. It ended on Page road at east Loop 281 in Harrison county.

"He made it across the north bound side and he struck a pickup truck on the inside lane, after he glanced off that truck , he struck a car," says Gregg county DPS trooper Terence Helton.

Troopers spotted the white pickup speeding on smelly road, driven by 37 year old Charles Ray Owen Jr. A high speed pursuit led them to the intersection of Page road and the loop.

"After making contact with the subject, subject evaded and initiated pursuit and pursuit ended here at Page road and 281," Helton says.

Investigators say Owen shot through the intersection running a stop sign at Page road at a very high rate of speed and could not make the turn, all of this happening because of a warrant on him out of another state. Owen was living and working in east Texas, but had a warrant for his arrest on a burglary charge from Michigan. Owen clipped another truck before T-boning a car driven by Robert Smith of Longview.

"The person in the car was fatally injured," Helton says.

Many who witnessed the scene were sickened that an innocent motorist was killed in the chase.

"I got here this morning and I knew there's been a bad wreck I didn't know how bad it was until a lady told me somebody had been killed, I think its a shame that someone has to lose their life over someone who has a warrant for burglary," says area business owner Steve Holderby.

Owen was taken to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries. DPS officials say he will be arraigned on multiple charges when he gets out of the hospital.
