UT Tyler wins thriller for ASC Championship

TYLER, TX (UT-Tyler Media Relations) - The University of Texas at Tyler Patriots punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Mississippi College in the finals of the 2010 American Southwest Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex on Sunday.

The Patriots will learn their NCAA first round opponent and destination on Monday.

Mississippi College struck first on Sunday with a goal from Julio Cesar Espinal off a corner kick in the 35th minute to give the Choctaws a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

It wasn't until the 77th minute that UT Tyler scored the equalizer, when Daniel Pineda found the back of the net unassisted.

With eight minutes remaining, Chris Powell hit the game winner for the Patriots via an assist from Blake Howard.

Mark Oliphant yeilded just the one Choctaw goal and made two assists.  Overall, the Patriots took 14 shots to MC's eight.

Jake Urbaniak was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and teammates Powell, Oliphant, and Justin NeSmith joined him on the All-Tournament team.
