SFA hammers Nicholls

Posted by Coleman Swierc

Thibodeaux, La (SFA Media) -  The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team scored early and often Saturday night to defeat Nicholls, 48-13, at Guidry Stadium. The victory moves SFA to 7-2 on the season and 4-1 in Southland Conference play, and keeps them in a tie a top the conference standings.

The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 34-0 first half lead and never looked back. SFA racked 412 of its 461 yards of total offense in the opening half, while holding the Colonels to 42, including minus two yards rushing in the first 30 minutes. Nicholls recorded only two first downs in the opening 30 minutes with one of those coming by way of penalty.

Senior quarterback Jeremy Moses completed 18-of-36 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Lumberjack quarterbacks finished the game with 19 completions for 280 yards. Freshman Keith Lawson carried the ball nine times for a career-high 71 yards and a score in the opening half.

SFA put an exclamation point on the win to start the second half. The Lumberjacks opened the half with a Gralyn Crawford 99-yard kick return for a touchdown, which was his second of the season, and tacked on another score 37 seconds later to take 48-3 lead.

Moses connected with sophomore Cordell Roberson twice (one and 73 yards) and sophomore Jeremy Barnes (six yards). The 'Jacks carried the ball 30 times for 120 yards on the night led by Lawson. The San Antonio native finished the game with 10 carries for 75 yards and a score, while Barnes added 17 carries for 59 yards and two scores.

Nicholls cracked the scoreboard with three seconds remaining in the second quarter when freshman Andrew Dolan booted a 32-field goal. The Colonels were only able to score 10 points in the second half.

Moses' streak of pass attempts without an interception came to an end late in the first half. With just under a minute remaining in the opening half, Moses' pass to sophomore Jeremy Barnes went through his hands and was picked off by the Nicholls' secondary.

The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday, Nov. 13, when they host Southeastern Louisiana at Homer Bryce Stadium. The game against the Lions is slated to begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are available through the SFA Ticket Office, (936) 468-JACK.
