Rezoning Proposal Draws Major Opposition

A proposed zoning change that would allow a retail and business development on South Broadway drew more than 100 people in protest.

The rezoning would affect more than 350 acres of land on Broadway, south of Cumberland just north of the future site of Loop 49.

Homeowner Dr. Scott Lieberman said, "Most of the people moved to Tyler to take advantage of the lifestyle that was here. Most of us chose to move to Tyler and not Dallas, or Arlington, or some of the other cities that have been overblown and overbuilt without any real conception or planning of maintaining a lifestyle we seek out here."

The citizens succeeded in getting the matter postponed. The Planning and Zoning Commission tabled the issue for at least 30 days.
