ATLANTA, GA (CNN) - A giant panda named Lun Lun at Zoo Atlanta gave birth this morning to one cub. This is the first panda birth in the U.S. this year.
Round-the-clock birth watch began on Monday, Oct. 18 and will continue for the first months of the cub's life. Giant panda gestation averages 135 days, but can range from 83 to 197 days.
The cub is the third offspring for Lun Lun and her mate Yang Yang. All the offspring were the products of artificial insemination since the pair failed to mate naturally.
The public will get a chance to see the baby in the spring.
