Tyler police hold memorial service for police dog

TYLER, TX - The Tyler Police Department held a memorial service on Thursday, October 28, for Magic, one of the department's two K-9 officers.

Magic died of renal disease on October 21, after serving nine years with Tyler PD.

Magic was directly responsible for suspect apprehensions, hundreds of narcotics arrests, and thousands of dollars worth of seizures in currency and other property.

Magic's handler and partner since 2007 was Officer Steve Black. Black was the second handler in Magic's career with Tyler PD.

Another Tyler PD officer who had worked with Magic, Officer Philip Johnson, said it's important for the department to remember his time, just like they would with any other police officer.

"He is just like an officer, just like I am that drives the car," Johnson said. "He just sits in the seat behind me instead of driving. He is just like one of us."

During his career, Magic was also involved in Red Ribbon Week in Tyler ISD.
